2016 Legacy Award Winners: Sequoia Hospital, Porta’s Auto Body & Tow, & Broadway Cleaners

For the fourth consecutive year, the Redwood City-San Mateo County Chamber of Commerce is presenting Legacy Awards to three of Redwood City’s businesses recognizing their ability to stand the test of time here in our evolving community, each for over 40 years.

Sequoia Hospital, Porta’s Auto Body & Towing Company, and Broadway Cleaners each have tenacity and a commitment to community, which has made them pillar organizations in Redwood City.

Together these organizations represent over 200 years in business! Not only that, but each business has continued their membership for over 40 years in the Chamber during that time. They all have been contributing partners to the business community and each recognizes how important the Chamber of Commerce has been in helping them build their strong community of support.

Sequoia Hospital has been a Chamber member since the 1950’s. Since joining, it has remained a committed and strong partner with the Chamber. Too many members to count were delivered in the Labor and Delivery Wing at this special community hospital. Over the decades, Sequoia Hospital has been a huge supporter of Chamber Programs and Events, especially the Progress Seminar and Leadership. Their leadership has been our leadership, with President and CEO Bill Graham and Past President and CEO Glenna Vaskelis, both serving on our Chamber Board – Glenna also served as our 2009 Board Chair and on committees. We are honored to have our community pillar, Sequoia Hospital receive this award.

Porta’s Auto Body and Tow should be your first choice when you’re stuck on the side of the road or need auto body repair. The Chamber proudly refers customers to Porta’s. Theirs is a family owned business that has resided in Redwood City for 90+ years and have been loyal Chamber members for over 40 of those 90 years. Owner Carl Porta followed in his father George’s footsteps, and took over the business his dad started in the 1920’s. Jeannette Bullock, Carl’s sister expertly runs the business end of the company. With continued hard work and dedication, and truly caring about their customers, the company that George started in the ‘20’s is still vibrant and thriving today in Redwood City because of the hard work of his 2 children. Thank you Carl and Jeanette!

Broadway Cleaners has been a community icon for over 70 years. Marti and Jim Russell have made their business a longtime Chamber partner for over 40 years. Their commitment to providing state-of-the-art, environmentally safe cleaning and excellent service to their customers is a testament as to why they’ve been a successful Chamber business member. Marti and Jim are absolute pleasures to work with and make their customers feel like they will be take care of.

When looking at the changes and major events that have occurred over the last 40-50 plus years, the success of these businesses is amazing.
